The racing gods delivered on Monday, 23 October, with another successful running of the annual Coona Cup.
Perfect spring weather, combined with a near- perfect racing surface, led to strong attendance by race-goers at this year’s event.
Coonabarabran Jockey Club president, Stewart Rodgers, said it was a near- record crowd, with more than 1500 punters through the gates.
“From Bundaberg to the Victorian border, we had a great mix of locals and visitors,” Mr Rodgers said.
“And the visitors didn’t just come for the Cup, they came for the whole weekend...some are still here, which is great for the town.”
Mr Rodgers said the racing surface was the best they had ever seen.
“The jockeys all thought it was great to ride on,” he said.
“Leading up to Monday, we ordered 20 to 35 millimetres of rain - we got 29mm.
“It was ideal racing conditions, with a full field of horses.”
In the racing stakes, doubles was the theme of the day, with jockeys Greg Ryan, Serg Lisnyy and Hyosik Lee, from Korea, each claiming two wins each, while trainers, Sue Grills and Rod Northam collected two wins.
The Frampton family from Merriwa also secured both the Coonabarabran and Baradine Cups - a feat never achieved previously.
While there were no wins for locally connected horses, several managed placings.
“There is a real surge in racing at the moment, with a special interest in country racing,” Mr Rodgers said.
“The fact that we’ve been able to improve the quality of our track during this time is really paying off for the club now.
“The Coona Cup is the culmination of a good weekend, and the amazing support from the local community is what keeps everything running so well.”
