Teaming up for a 12-week health bootcamp, Brandon Nixon and Nikki Oliver shed more than 30 kilograms between them, taking out first and second place in the Coona vs Baradine challenge. Now the dynamic duo have plans to continue on their weight-loss journey and smash some new goals!
How did you come to join this 12-week challenge - was there a “moment” or did something inspire you to sign up?
Brandon - I signed up because I was sick of what I looked like, my clothes weren’t fitting, I was always tired and had no energy. I had always wanted to get fit and lose weight and had tried many times, but this is the first time I was successful in doing so and I’m sticking with it.
Nikki - It was actually Brandon who inspired me to sign up. He had mentioned it and I thought, why not?
Can you explain the format of the 12-week challenge?
B - The 12-week bootcamp was run by Dauntless Training and Nutrition, which is owned by Ebbony Bradford. It included sample meal plans for us to follow, individual calories and macros to our current weight, all bootcamp sessions and support when needed. We weighed in at the beginning and every four weeks after that. Once Ebbony had our results she would alter our meal plans and decrease our calories to suit our new weight.
N - We attended bootcamp and the Healthy Town Challenge classes almost six days a week with Nick and Ash.
Results at the end of the challenge?
B - A loss of 14.48% body fat, which was 19.4kg and 57 centimetres. I also received a prize for winning the challenge – a massage, personal training sessions, protein powders, protein bars, clothes, water bottles, protein shaker.
N - I actually shocked myself with how well I went. I didn’t picture coming second that’s for sure, but with a 12.4kg loss, I’m keen to keep going. The top 10 people with the highest weight loss percentage received a prize, but for me, the biggest prize was my results.
How are you feeling now that the challenge is over?
B - Amazing! My life and health has improved dramatically. I actually have energy all the time now, my sleep pattern is better, my whole quality of life has improved and I’m just a whole lot happier.
N - The challenge was just the beginning for me. I’m looking forward to continuing on. I have so much more energy and I’m so much stronger mentally and physically than I was before.
What was the biggest hurdle you had to overcome during the challenge?
B - Staying on track with my eating at the start.
N - The first two weeks - I struggled, I wanted to give up. Trying to learn to eat the right amount of calories, proteins and fats plus balance your life with your kids and work was hard, but by week three I was comfortable with it all and by week four I was addicted.
Do you think it is important to have a strong support network and training buddy?
B - I had Nikki and Tahlia do this with me the whole time and I honestly could not have done it without them. It just made the whole experience more enjoyable and also a little competitive, but it was so great to hear how they were progressing as well. My family was also very supportive, telling me I shouldn’t be eating a certain food when I felt like a treat.
N - Having support made the challenge a lot easier for me. There were days you would want to give up, but having a training partner by your side made the journey worthwhile. Our friendship grew closer and it’s good to be able to share a life changing event with such an amazing friend.
What would you say to other people who know they need to get off their bum and lose some weight and get fit, but just can’t seem to get motivated enough?
B - Just get out and do it! Once you see the results it will inspire you to keep going!
N - There’s plenty of opportunities to get fit and healthy in Coona. You need to start today, not tomorrow, not next week but TODAY. If you keep putting it off it never happens.
Coonabarabran training partners, Nikki Oliver and Brandon Nixon are full of energy after a unique 12-week challenge.
