The eyes of the Commonwealth will be on Coonabarabran on Wednesday, 31 January 2018 as the Queen’s Baton Relay travels through town, making its way around Australia in the lead up to the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast.
More than 3800 baton bearers are needed to share the dream of the ‘friendly Games’ as part of the Queen’s Baton Relay.
A community nomination program is now open, allowing people from Coonabarabran and the surrounding region an opportunity to carry the baton.
Baton bearers are people of all abilities who inspire others to be great.
Baton bearers will represent their community with pride and showcase to the world the region’s outstanding community people, sporting achievements, cultural activity and landscapes.
Warrumbungle Shire Council mayor, Peter Shinton, said he was delighted to be a part of an event that would take Coonabarabran and the Shire to the world stage.
“I encourage you to nominate a local legend you think deserves to be a baton bearer - whether they’re an aspiring, young person or someone who is already accomplished,” Cr Shinton said.
“The Queen’s Baton Relay is a rare opportunity to shine a light on the people and places that help make our community truly great.
“It is not only a symbol of the Commonwealth Games, but an event that will connect Coonabarabran with communities across Australia and the entire Commonwealth.
“It’s a tradition that celebrates community pride and that shows us how important a role sport plays to build our great community, which is why we’ve chosen to embrace the baton’s visit wholeheartedly.
“It also means that Coonabarabran will play an important part in the largest multi-sport event to be staged in Australia in a decade.”
The baton will start its global journey at Buckingham Palace on Commonwealth Day, Monday, 13 March, when Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will place a message within the baton calling for the Commonwealth’s athletes to come together in peaceful and friendly competition.
The Queen’s Baton Relay will then travel through every Commonwealth nation and territory on its way to Australia, finishing at the Gold Coast on 4 April, 2018 where the Games will be declared open when the Queen’s message is read aloud.
Baton bearer nominations close Monday, 15 May. Visit gc2018.com/qbr for further information.
