Council “Mo Bro’s” show support for men’s health campaign
December 1, 2016
A number of Warrumbungle Shire Council male employees banded together over the past month, to support the popular annual event - “Movember”.
Movember involves the growing of moustaches during the month of November to raise awareness of men’s health issues, such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer and men’s suicide.
By encouraging men - known as “Mo Bro’s” - to get involved, Movember aims to increase early cancer detection, diagnosis and effective treatments, and ultimately reduce the number of preventable deaths.
Besides annual check- ups, the Movember Foundation encourages men to be aware of family history of cancer and to adopt a healthier lifestyle.
Movember commenced in 2003 with two mates, Travis Garone and Luke Slattery, attempting to bring back the “mo” as a fashion statement.
The concept was taken to a new level in 2004 with the official registration of the Movember Foundation.
Since that humble beginning, when $54,000 was raised for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia, the Movember movement has spread from Australia to Austria, Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Hong Kong, Germany, Ireland, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, UK and USA, with over $770 million raised since 2003.
Eleven Council employees signed up for Movember, with some impressive whiskers, ‘staches, mo’s, soup strainers and upper lip plumages revealed at the end of November.
After a month of friendly rivalry and the bestowing of nicknames, the official “shave off” was held on Wednesday, 30 November, undertaken by hairdresser, Tammy Allen and her assistant, Elle Capewell.
Council’s Movember participants were all presented with awards for their efforts, along with badges to be worn for the next week, depicting their conferred “Mr Men” moniker.
Council’s Mo Bro’s express their thanks to the business house from across the shire for their support of this event, with over $1500 raised for the Movember Foundation and its causes.
