A small group of volunteers has set out to ensure that no local people will spend Christmas alone this year, by creating the Coonabarabran Christmas Lunch.
To be held from 12 noon to 3pm at the Coonabarabran Town Hall on Christmas Day, Sunday, 25 December, the Christmas Lunch is a free event and all members of the public are invited to attend.
One of the event organisers, Jenny Dumble, said the idea for the Christmas Lunch came from talking with people in Coonabarabran and the wider community.
“Christmas is about being together, but there are a lot of people in town that are spending Christmas on their own,” Mrs Dumble said.
“There is a real need for something like this in Coonabarabran, which we’ve noticed through varying roles in the community, so a group of like-minded people decided to collaborate and bring the project to life.
“Coona is a lovely, supportive town, so we hope we can spread some joy throughout the community with the Christmas Lunch.”
The volunteer group is currently seeking monetary donations from the public.
Any funds remaining after the Christmas Lunch will be donated back to a local charity.
“Warrumbungle Shire Council has made a generous donation to kick things off, including the hire of the hall,” Mrs Dumble said.
“We understand that not everyone can donate, but if you would like to assist with helping set up or clean up, or helping on the day, it would be greatly appreciated.
“We have also compiled a pre-arranged list of food items for those who wish to donate physical goods.”
Mrs Dumble said it was important people understood that the Christmas Lunch was a not-for-profit, non-denominational event.
“Anyone in Coonabarabran or across the shire is welcome to join us on Christmas Day, from families to seniors
and everyone in between.
“Lunch will be served at 1pm, and there will be cold meat, roast veggies, salads, dessert and most importantly, good company.
“If this year’s event is a success, we’d love to make it an annual event.”
To attend the Coonabarabran Christmas Lunch, please RSVP before Friday, 16 December, to Jenny on 0437 889 657 or Brian (during business hours) on 02 6842 1043.
