At 16-years-old, Tyler Shoobert has penned a song that would give most established artists goosebumps.
Tyler’s original composition, ‘The Choice is Yours’, recently won the 2015 Fretfest Regional Song Contest, announced on Saturday, 12 December.
The second year of the competition attracted entries from across Australia, including Tyler’s home town of Binnaway.
The year 10 student at Coonabarabran High School wrote his winning song in a week, inspired by the passing of his grandfather.
Tyler was encouraged to enter the songwriting contest after attending a local workshop run by Fretfest founder, Al Buchan, earlier this year.
Although he boasts a collection of more than 50 songs under his belt, Tyler admits he was surprised with the win.
“Dreams do come true,” Tyler said.
“This is exactly what I want to do and sometimes I have to pinch myself and ask, ‘is this really happening?’
“This contest will help me to keep writing music and improve as an artist.”
Fretfest provides a holistic approach to starting an independent music career, built around live music performances, industry insights and audience development.
The music company aims to build confidence and recognition, and has helped launch the career of numerous Australian artists, including Pete Murray.
Tyler started performing publicly when he was eight-years-old in Coonabarabran Public School concerts and as part of Moorambilla Voices.
However, his mother, Toni Landers, said Tyler had been singing since he was a toddler.
“He was always musically inclined,” Mrs Landers said.
“He used to walk around the house singing ‘We will Rock You’ when he was three.
“He still practices every day, sometimes up to two and a half hours.”
As part of his prize, Tyler was presented with a $2000 Cole Clark guitar on Wednesday, 23 December, and will soon embark on a 12-month Fretfest mentorship.
It is hoped that with sponsorship, Tyler will also be able to record and release his own single at the end of 2016.
