Kitchen and Renovation Concepts, owned and operated by former Coonabarabran resident, Abraham Damen, was the winner of the 2015 Gold Rhino Award at the Dubbo Chamber of Commerce Business Awards held on Friday, 23 October.
The son John Damen and Joy O’Farrell, Abraham completed his education in Coonabarabran and went on to qualify as an electrical engineer at University of NSW.
He has previously worked for a large consulting firm in Sydney, on projects including the Kurnell desalination plant, before moving to Dubbo to start his business.
Kitchen and Renovation Concepts began with Abraham as the sole operator, supported by his parents. Abraham gained his qualification as a cabinetmaker and engaged his first employee after two years.
The Dubbo-based business was originally distributing flat-pack kitchens, which were being imported by Abraham’s parents, John and Joy, and their business partner, Ian McLean.
However, as the Dubbo business grew, the move away from importing was made and the Coonabarabran importing business was wound up.
With the business growing rapidly, Abraham invested heavily in state- of-the-art manufacturing machinery and now runs two production lines in his factory in Dubbo, which employs 24 people.
The business uses all Australian produced board and is competitively manufacturing and supplying its products to the Australian market, an unusual trend in Australian manufacturing today.
Kitchen and Renovation Concepts is now the largest manufacturing joinery in Dubbo and undertakes both large and small residential and commercial projects.
The business was recently awarded the joinery contract for the Dubbo RSL Club, which is undergoing a large refurbishment, and also supplies joinery to several builders of new homes in the region.
The business also took the step recently of opening a distributorship in Orange and this complements the business owned by Ian McLean in Coonabarabran, which also distributes products manufactured by Kitchen and Renovation Concepts.
Kitchens are a rapidly evolving and exciting field and Abraham is passionate about his business and is always looking for innovative ways to improve customer service and products.
Last year he went to the world’s largest design centre in Milan and brought back a range of trends and styles that he is incorporating into kitchen designs.
He was also recognised in last year’s business awards, gaining the title of “Young Entrepreneur” at a local and regional level.
Abraham said Kitchen and Renovation Concepts was a team-orientated business.
“I am thrilled to be able to share this prestigious Gold Rhino award with my team.”
